Although yoga has been defined and practiced in a variety of ways over the centuries, the modern version can best be understood as a practice comprised of three main components: yoga postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayamas) and meditation. The main goal of yoga is to bring the mind, body and breath into perfect harmony.

Tips, Tricks & Techniques

If you are an absolute beginner, start with a true beginner class wherein you will learn the basic poses from scratch. Many studios will state that classes are open to “all levels,” although that doesn’t necessarily mean that they will stop to teach you the poses if you don’t already know them. If in doubt, ask one of the instructors.

Gear You'll Need

  • Clothes – comfortable, breathable clothing is essential for yoga. In general, the more form fitting, the better as loose clothing can slip and bunch up. Avoid lycra-type pants as they tend to be rather slick and may cause you to slip.
  • Mats – a good yoga mat is essential for a few reasons. First, it will provide cushion over a hard floor. Second, it will help prevent you from slipping once you get all sweaty. Third, it will help define your personal space in a crowded class.
  • Blocks – optional, although very commonly used in order to increase comfort, especially for beginners or those who might be a little less flexible.
  • Straps – also optional, but very helpful for stretching as well as for practicing poses that you might otherwise not be able to perform due physical limitations.
