The ancient Greeks had a habit of exercising and competing in the buff. In fact, the word gymnastics, which is derived from the Greek gymnazo, actually means, “to train naked.” While this may sound a bit odd, one has to realize that the Greeks did many things sans clothing. Even the very modest ones in the bunch typically wore little more than a fig leaf. Then again, it’s not like they had much of a choice. The leotard wasn’t even invented until the 19th century.
