George Balanchine once claimed that his cat taught him everything he knew about dance. He may not have been entirely truthful, but there’s little doubt that, at some point in the history of mankind, he certainly wasn’t the first to imitate the world around him with movement. Few things permeate our evolution as completely. Whether used to celebrate a successful bison hunt or a touchdown, dance is as distinct to the human race as the opposable thumb and perhaps as vital.
