Contrary to the name, Ballet originated during the Italian Renaissance as an interpretation of fencing. It wasn’t until a hundred or so years later that Louis XIV, himself an avid dancer, founded the Royal Dance Academy and what we think of as classical ballet was born. Poor Italians. We should probably call it balletto every once in awhile just to show some respect. Either that, or issue sabres along with those tutus.
